Introduction

Getting rid of large, unwanted items in Zürich does not have to be complicated. Our bulky waste disposal service in Zurich at disposal.ch covers everything too big, too heavy, or too awkward for the Züri-Sack, collected directly from your home, office, or storage space as part of our broader disposal services in Zurich.

The city's ERZ kerbside service requires a Sperrgutmarke (approximately CHF 9 per piece), a maximum weight of 25 kg per item, items placed outside by 7 am, and three working days' notice. Weekends are not covered. For anything on an upper floor, ERZ will not enter your building. For many residents, especially those without a vehicle or dealing with large or heavy pieces, this creates a real problem.

We solve that problem. Our team comes directly to your floor, carries items out safely, and takes them for proper sorting and recycling. Whether it is a single wardrobe or a full flat's worth of furniture, we confirm a fixed price before we arrive, no surprises on the day. January and February are our busiest months as move-out leases end; booking early in these months ensures you get your preferred slot.

⚠ Illegal dumping in Zürich,h leaving items on public property without a Sperrgutmarke, carries fines of CHF 200 to CHF 1'000+. Our service is the compliant, stress-free alternative.

What Counts as Bulky Waste in Zurich?

Bulky waste (Sperrgut) is defined by ERZ as combustible waste too large or too heavy for the Züri-Sack. In practice: anything that cannot fit in a standard household waste bag.

The table below shows common items, their approximate weights, and how each disposal route handles them.

Item Approx. Weight ERZ Option disposal.ch Option
3-seat sofa 50 - 120 kg 1-5 Sperrgutmarken, kerbside only Doorstep carry, any floor, fixed price
Double wardrobe 60 - 120 kg 2-5 marks, 25 kg limit per piece Dismantle if needed, no weight limit
Double mattress 20 - 40 kg 1-2 marks, kerbside only Direct removal from the bedroom
Kitchen unit set 80 - 200 kg Multiple marks + self-carry to kerb Dismantling available, sorted recycling
Fitted carpet (1 room) 15 - 30 kg 1-2 marks, rolled + kerbside Removal from the floor if required
Washing machine/fridge 50 - 100 kg Via SENS/Swico , NOT Sperrgutmarke SENS/Swico-compliant e-waste routing
Garden furniture set 30 - 80 kg 1-3 marks, kerbside Carried from the garden or balcony
Renovation timber/boards Variable Recyclinghof only, self-delivery Home pickup + wood recycling routing
⚠ Electronic appliances (washing machines, fridges, TVs) are NOT Sperrgut; they require SENS/Swico VRB channel disposal. We handle this correctly. See our electronic waste disposal page for compliance details.

Bulky Waste Items We Remove

We handle every category of oversized household and commercial waste. Each item type follows a specific processing route after collection.

01

Furniture, Sofas, Wardrobes, Beds, Tables

Furniture is the most common bulky waste request in Zürich. Sofas, corner sofas, beds, wardrobes, and dining sets are collected directly from your room. Large items are dismantled where needed to navigate staircases and narrow doorways. Usable pieces are offered to local Brockenhaus organisations before anything goes to recycling. See our dedicated furniture disposal page for specific furniture types and logistics.

02

Mattresses, Single, Double, Boxspring, Waterbed

Mattresses cannot go in the Züri-Sack and are cumbersome to carry to a Recyclinghof. We collect from your bedroom and route to certified mattress recycling, where only urethane foam, steel springs, and fabric are all separated and processed. Full type-specific detail on our mattress disposal page.

03

Carpets and Floor Coverings

Old carpets are heavy, roll awkwardly, and require a vehicle to transport. We remove fitted carpets, including lifting from the floor if required, then roll, carry out, and route to certified textile recycling. All flooring types covered on our carpet disposal page.

04

Kitchen Units and Appliances

Bulky kitchen removals often combine wooden cabinet units with electrical appliances in one job. Wooden units go to wood recycling; appliances are routed via SENS/Swico channels for correct compliance. Dismantling service available. Full details on our kitchen items disposal page.

05

Electrical Appliances, White Goods and Electronics

Washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges, and televisions require VRB-system disposal via SENS or Swico-certified channels, not standard Sperrgut routing. FCKW-containing appliances (older fridges, freezers) require specialist coolant extraction under the ChemRRV regulation, which we arrange separately. See our electronic waste disposal page for full compliance details.

06

Wood and Renovation Waste

Timber, old shelving, pallets, and garden furniture are collected and routed to wood recycling or authorised energy recovery. Renovation waste, including plasterboard, tiles, and rubble, is assessed on an individual basis. Contact us for larger renovation clearance jobs.

07

Garden and Outdoor Items

Garden furniture sets, trampolines, large tools, and planters are collected from your garden, balcony, or terrace. Note: green waste (branches, clippings, soil) is a separate disposal category; confirm routing with us for mixed outdoor loads.

How It Works

01

Get your fixed price.

Send photos via WhatsApp (+41 76 413 6183) or fill in the quote form. We assess the items, floor level, and access conditions and send a binding fixed price, no obligation, usually within the hour.

02

Choose your collection slot.

Same-day and next-day options are available across Zürich and surrounding cantons, seven days a week. We confirm all details in advance.

03

We arrive and do the heavy lifting.

Our insured team carries items from any floor using equipment to protect your walls, floors, and door frames. Items are disassembled where needed. You do not need to move a thing.

04

Sorting, recycling, and responsible disposal.

After collection, items are sorted: usable pieces to Brockenhaus or donation first, recyclables to certified facilities by material type, electronics via SENS/Swico, and only unrecoverable waste to authorised thermal processing at Kehrichtverwertungsanlage Hagenholz or equivalent.

disposal.ch vs. ERZ Kerbside Collection

Understanding your options helps you choose the right route. This comparison is accurate as of May 2026.

Factor ERZ Kerbside Collection disposal.ch

Days available Monday to Friday only Seven days a week
Weight limit per item 25 kg maximum No weight limit

Appliances/electronics Not accepted, separate SENS/Swico step required Handled correctly under one booking

Recyclinghof drop-off Free, requires your vehicle and transport time Not needed, we come to you
Free Recyclinghof drop-off remains the most cost-effective option if you have a vehicle, enough time, and items under 40 kg. We recommend it when it genuinely works for you. Our service is for when it doesn't.

Common Challenges We Solve

01

No lift, narrow staircase

Zürich apartment buildings, especially in older Kreise (Kreis 3, 4, and 5), often have steep, narrow staircases that make carrying large items alone impossible. Our team brings stair-handling equipment and uses two-person carry techniques that protect your walls, bannisters, and door frames. We have removed full wardrobes from fifth-floor flats without a lift.

02

No parking space near the entrance

Zürich's residential parking restrictions can make it hard to stop a van close to a building entrance. We coordinate parking in advance and carry items to the nearest accessible point, included in your fixed price.

03

Mixed loads of furniture and appliances together

ERZ requires two completely separate processes for furniture and electrical appliances. We handle both in a single visit, routing each item type correctly, wood to recycling, and appliances via SENS/Swico, at no extra coordination cost to you.

04

Bereavement and estate situations

Clearing a property after a bereavement often involves many years of accumulated belongings. Our team handles these situations discreetly and carefully. You do not need to be present; we can coordinate with solicitors, property managers, or family members for access. Valuables are set aside before anything is removed. For a full property clearance, see our apartment clearance page.

05

Last-minute move-out deadlines

Move-out deadlines in Zürich are strict. A besenrein handover often means clearing furniture the day before. We offer same-day collection for urgent situations. Contact us by WhatsApp before noon for the best availability in the city.

What Happens After Collection

Every item we collect is assessed before disposal. We aim to minimise thermal processing and keep as much material as possible in active use.

Material First Option Second Option Last Resort
Wood (furniture, timber) Donation / Brockenhaus if usable Certified wood recycling/chipping Authorised energy recovery
Metal (frames, springs) Scrap metal recycling , Authorised disposal
Textiles/upholstery Donation to charitable organisations Textile recycling Authorised thermal processing
Electronics / white goods SENS/Swico VRB certified take-back , Not applicable
FCKW appliances (old fridges) Licensed coolant extraction (ChemRRV) SENS-certified body ,
Carpets/floor textiles Textile recovery/recycling organisation Fibre recycling facility Authorised thermal processing
Unrecoverable mixed waste , , Kehrichtverwertungsanlage Hagenholz
We do not use landfill as a primary route. Switzerland's USG (Umweltschutzgesetz) and VVEA (Abfallverordnung) prohibit landfilling of combustible waste; all items are thermally processed or recycled.

Need a Clean After the Clearance?

Once the bulky waste is gone, many tenants need the property cleaned to a standard for handover. Through our sister company Züriclean, we can arrange professional end-of-tenancy cleaning or move-out cleaning as part of the same booking, one call, one invoice, one handover date.

For full property emptying followed by professional cleaning, see our overall clearance page, which covers the complete end-to-end service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does bulky waste disposal cost in Zurich?

Prices depend on item count, floor level, and whether dismantling is required. Guide prices start at CHF 80 for a single large item and range to CHF 650 for a full two-room clearance. A floor surcharge of CHF 5-10 per floor may apply if items do not fit in the lift. Every job receives a binding fixed price via WhatsApp or the online form before we arrive.

What is the difference between Sperrgut and Sperrmüll?

Sperrgut is the official Swiss ERZ term for combustible oversized waste, furniture, mattresses, and carpets. Sperrmüll is the German informal term used colloquially in Switzerland. Both refer to the same category of large household items that cannot go in the Züri-Sack.

Do I need to buy a Sperrgutmarke?

If you use the ERZ kerbside service, yes, a Sperrgutmarke (approximately CHF 9 each, maximum 25 kg per piece) is required, available from post offices and selected retailers. If you book disposal.ch, you do not need a Sperrgutmarke; our fixed price covers everything.

Can you collect from the upper floors without a lift?

Yes. This is one of our most common requests. Our team carries items down staircases using appropriate equipment. We protect walls, floors, and door frames throughout. No additional charge for stairs within a standard access distance.

What items cannot be collected as bulky waste?

We cannot take asbestos-containing materials (pre-1990 insulation boards or old floor tiles, licensed specialist required), liquid chemicals such as paints and solvents (Sonderabfall route), and gas cylinders. For everything else, furniture, electronics, appliances, renovation materials, we can help or advise on the correct disposal route.

How quickly can you collect?

In most cases, same-day or next-day collection is available. Contact us before noon for same-day service in the Zürich area. Our peak periods are January-March (end-of-winter lease season) and May-June (spring renovation season); booking is recommended during these months.

What happens to the items after you collect them?

Items are sorted: usable pieces go to Brockenhaus or donation first, recyclables to certified recyclers (wood, metal, textiles separately), electronics via SENS/Swico, and only non-recoverable material goes to authorised thermal processing at Kehrichtverwertungsanlage Hagenholz or equivalent. Nothing to landfill as a primary route.

Can I combine bulky waste removal with apartment clearance or cleaning?

Yes. For a full flat clearance, see our apartment clearance page. For post-clearance cleaning to besenrein standard, we coordinate through zuericlean.com. For a complete combined service, see our overall clearance page. One booking covers everything.
